From Resilience to Leadership: Angelina’s Journey to Independence and Purpose. Meet Angelina
Life often throws us challenges that test our strength, and Angelina’s story is a testament to perseverance, courage, and the transformative power of support. As a widowed mother, Angelina has faced adversity with grace and determination, inspiring not only her daughters but everyone who hears her journey.
In 2001, Angelina’s world shifted dramatically. After being made redundant, her husband passed away suddenly, leaving her to navigate the dual challenges of grief and single parenthood. Despite the circumstances, she balanced raising her daughters with finding new employment, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.
In 2010, she embraced motherhood again during her parental leave, focusing on raising her youngest daughter. By 2018, she returned to work with Coles, but her physical health began to decline, and her confidence was shaken.
Finding Support With MatchWorks
In July 2019, determined to find a job that suited her needs as a principal caregiver and addressed her health challenges, Angelina turned to MatchWorks for support. This partnership marked a turning point.
The MatchWorks team provided Angelina with the tools to rebuild her confidence and prepare for a fresh start in the workforce. She honed her interview and job search skills, completed a Certificate III in Cleaning Operations, and received assistance with transport, technology, and workplace modifications tailored to her physical requirements.
While the path wasn’t without obstacles—including COVID-19 disruptions and the demands of homeschooling her daughters—Angelina persisted.
Turning Opportunity into Purpose
In February 2023, MatchWorks secured an interview for Angelina with a local Derrimut 24:7 Gym for a casual cleaning role. With her characteristic drive, Angelina seized the opportunity and quickly set her sights on more than just part-time work.
Within a year, she progressed from casual shifts to a full-time position, where she now trains new staff. Angelina’s transformation extends beyond her job title—she has regained her independence and the ability to provide a more comfortable life for her family.
“Employment has given me purpose,” Angelina shares. “I love that I get to work, and I’ve set an example for my daughters to never give up, no matter the obstacles they face.”
Looking Ahead
Angelina’s story is far from over. She dreams of further developing her leadership skills and saving money to take her daughters back to New Zealand, where they can reconnect as a family. Through her journey, she continues to inspire her daughters and others around her, showing that perseverance and the right support can lead to incredible achievements.
